Day 3 Review

China broke USA’s unbeaten run on Tuesday at the World Wheelchair Curling Championship 2012 in Chuncheon, South Korea.

The American’s had notched up a further win in the morning 6-4 against Scotland, but in the afternoon the Chinese took advantage of missed last shots by American Skip Patrick McDonald to win the game 7-3.

As so often in curling, the outcome of many of the games on Tuesday came down to last stones. While the Chinese were jubilant about their win against the USA, Skip Haitao Wang had earlier been on the other side of the fence, missing his own last shot in their game against Slovakia which allowed the Slovaks to take three points and win the game 6-5.

“With my key stone in the last end, I missed,” explained Wang, “I felt as if I’d fallen from the heavens - it was terrible.”

The Slovaks, now tied with the USA at the top of the standings on 5 wins and 1 loss, admitted it had been a lucky day for them.

“With both China and Sweden we were under pressure during the whole match. But in each case, the last end worked perfect for us,” said Milan Kalis, one of Slovakia’s coaches. He added: “we are extremely cautious now – there are still a lot of games to play. There are three games to go tomorrow and after tomorrow. We must concentrate.”

Hosts Korea had two wins on Tuesday, beating Russia 9-1, then Scotland 9-2. After the game against Russia, Skip Hak Sung Kim said his team had made few mistakes and that they were all feeling more comfortable on the ice.

Russia recovered from their loss against Korea to beat Canada 7-3 in the afternoon session. China, Korea and Russia are all tied on 4 wins and 2 losses apiece.

For Canada, it was their second defeat of the day as they handed Norway their first win of the event 6-5.

Norwegian Skip Rune Lorentsen was relieved: “Getting this win feels like a burden of my shoulders. All our matches have been tight. With a little more we could have won every game and we would be sitting on 5-0 but it has not gone our way.”

In the afternoon, Lorentsen led his team to another win 8-5 over Italy. In the morning session Italy had their first win 6-3 against Sweden.

“The last time that we played Jalle [Jungnell SWE Skip] was in the tiebreaker when he eliminated us from the Paralympics in Vancouver!” explained Italian Skip Andrea Tabanelli. He added: “I think his team is missing something here on the ice with their third Glenn Ikonen not playing here, I think you can see the difference.”

The Swedes switched their second and third players around for their game against Slovakia and this looked to have made the difference as they led the game until the very last shot when Jungnell was wide and allowed the Slovaks to steal two points for a 6-5 win.
